Does UGL have a structured program that addresses sustainability issues?
Yes. UGL has appointed a dedicated Sustainability Manager who is responsible for developing a sustainability program and facilitating the integration of sustainability principles into the company’s operations. The UGL Sustainability Program will focus on identifying internal efficiencies with the aim of reducing environmental impacts, reducing costs and developing more sustainable business practices.

What does sustainability mean to UGL?
Sustainability is about meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. UGL recognises the importance of playing its part by adopting a more sustainable approach to business. Our focus is to ensure that our sustainability efforts reduce our environmental footprint, benefit the community while driving improved returns for shareholders.

What is UGL doing in relation to climate change?
UGL understands that climate change is an important issue which requires a response from governments, businesses and the community. UGL has taken action by conducting an assessment of internal energy use and identifying initiatives to reduce its current energy usage.

Is UGL involved in the Carbon Disclosure Project?
Yes. UGL has made a commitment to participate in the Carbon Disclosure Project. The company is preparing a formal response to the project and reviewing company energy data. Does UGL meet the requirements to participate in the Australian Government's Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme?
No. Based on an energy use assessment conducted in 2007, UGL does not fulfil the requirements to participate in the Australian Government’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (emissions trading scheme).

Does UGL trigger the thresholds required to participate in the National Greenhouse & Energy Reporting Act 2007?

How does UGL ensure its employees are made aware of sustainability issues?
UGL has developed a designated sustainability section on its intranet, distributes a sustainability newsletter to staff globally and encourages staff to provide feedback and suggestions.

Does UGL see the growing awareness of sustainability issues as a business opportunity?
Yes. UGL sees climate change and the need for investment in sustainability as a significant opportunity because it has strong capabilities in areas such as water treatment, rail transport, energy efficiency and clean technology.

Does UGL integrate sustainability into its products and services?
Yes. UGL is constantly seeking opportunities to assist our clients with reducing their environmental footprint and improving operating efficiencies. For example, we offer energy management expertise and green cleaning solutions for buildings, fuel-efficient locomotives and are involved in renewable energy ventures.

What approach does UGL take to managing the environmental impacts of its activities?
UGL understands the importance of maintaining high standards of environmental management and developing systems to reduce the environmental impact of its activities. As such, UGL Services and UGL Infrastructure have achieved certification in Australia for their Environmental Management System to the International Standard ISO14001. UGL Infrastructure and UGL Premas have both achieved certification to ISO 14001 in Singapore.
