Overview UGL recognises the importance of adopting a sustainable approach to business. The company’s focus will be on ensuring its sustainability efforts not only contribute to the environment and community but also drive improved returns for shareholders. UGL recently appointed a Sustainability Manager to develop a sustainability program and facilitate the integration of sustainability principles into the company’s operations. UGL’s Sustainability Program UGL’s Sustainability Program will drive internal efficiency initiatives and ensure the company develops better business practices. The company will also use the program to facilitate opportunities to develop and utilise cleaner and smarter products and services with our technology partners and our clients. The UGL Sustainability Program will include: - benchmarking consumption of energy, air travel and paper;
- determining our carbon footprint and reporting our energy use;
- identifying initiatives to limit consumption and increase operating efficiency;
- working with service providers and contractors to identify areas to reduce our impact;
- establishing appropriate systems and processes to report on our progress;
- integrating sustainability initiatives into our strategic planning activities;
- proactively and clearly communicating our efforts to our operations globally; and
- seeking individual contributions from UGL’s people.
Our Carbon Footprint An important element of the sustainability program includes a response to climate change. UGL has taken steps to assess its energy use and identify its carbon footprint as it seeks to reduce energy consumption, operate more efficiently and meet regulatory requirements.
UGL has also committed to participate in the Carbon Disclosure Project. A formal response to the Carbon Disclosure Project is currently being prepared, and the company energy data is being reviewed. It is anticipated that UGL’s data will be available for review in 2009.
Further information on the Carbon Disclosure Project is available at: http://www.cdproject.net/ Environmental Management UGL understands the importance of maintaining high standards of environmental management and developing systems to reduce the environmental impact of its activities. As such, UGL Services and UGL Infrastructure have achieved certification in Australia for their Environmental Management System to the International Standard ISO14001.
